Galahs and corellas were on the power lines, and a wallaby hopped right past us. In town we went to the Cloncurry Tourist Info which had great display.
This is a fossilised sting-ray tail |
Darryl purchased his fossicking permit and info, and we did a little shopping before returning to the park at the Tourist Info for morning tea.
The drive out to Maronan station on the Fullarton River was south-east of Cloncurry. We were surprised by 5 Greyhound Coaches in a convoy (going the other way). There were gum trees in flower and Darryl thought that meant rain.
When we arrived there was already one guy fossicking on the ridge and two couples had just set up. We went over and said hello to the couples. They were Vick and Wendy, Marguerite and Ed from the Isa, (but also had been Curry locals). Ed is Wal's brother and also sister Gail runs the Tourist Info, and it turned out it was him who provided the excellent mineral collection (some of which is above) at the Tourist Info.. We set up, had lunch then about 3pm the men all went up the ridge.
I made a cuppa and went over to chat with Wendy and Marguerite. Lots of local info. Around 2 hours later the men came back. All had garnets. Ed had the best lot, but Darryl brought back gravel which we went through after dinner, so he had lots of small ones. We spotted 4 satellites, 4 planes and 1 falling star. The Milky Way was beautiful.
We were supposed to fossick here in 2019 after returning from the Kimberley.
