Hawai'i - Volcano National Park

We had a plan to try and do the walk to the Captain Cook monument, but accidentally missed the turnoff and it was a narrow winding road, so decided to go on and return to do that another day. This meant continuing to Volcano National Park.

On the way was Punalulu Black Sand Beach

We almost only went this far...notice the group of people on the right with their backs to us? Keep scrolling...

Turns out those people were watching the Green turtles basking! Lucky we went back!

We saw more Mongoose on the drive. Next stop was to the slopes of Mauna Loa passing by black goats. Lunch was at the National Park Picnic Area we and only just finished eating when it started to rain. It seems that Steve lost his glasses in the rush to pack up.

Steam vents on Mauna Loa

These really reminded me of the NZ Christmas Bush

Further along were the Thurston lava tubes.

One of the craters

We saw several craters - Luamanu, Puhimau  and Kilaeuea Iki Crater.

Look closely and you can see the trail through the middle of the craters with people walking across.

We wanted to go and see Green Sand beach, but that was a blowout. The road led to a primitive carpark, which was apparently several kilometers from the beach, and 'someone' blocked the road with their cars and were charging to take you in their bommy 4x4s the rest of the way. We probably could have walked but it all looked very hillbilly and we didn't even want to leave the vehicle alone, so headed back out and found the Lava cliffs with a natural bridge and Wind turbines.

Shane, Jess and the kids had a relaxing day at  nearby beach.
