Maui - West & South

I had coffee then we drove back down the mountain, and had pretty good views (unlike the day before).

Driving west around the side of the mountain we came across this lava flow from 1790.

Further to the south of the island the road became very hairy and narrow with some unsealed, or in really poor condition.

This part was 'very' interesting!

Remember we are in a great big Ford Van!

The same corner as the second photo above, but from the beach

Charles Lindberg's grave (only found out later there was the grave of a monkey nearby)

Finally we got to the Haleakala National Park and selected our camping spot in Kipahulu campground.

Waimoko Falls was at the end of a local trail.

We got back to the camper for lunch and I saw humpback whales right out from where we were parked...just magic!

  1. The fee to enter Haleakala National Park also includes three nights of free camping either on the volcano and or around this Southern end which is also part of the national park.

  2. Waimoku Falls is a very popular walk from the Visitor Centre.
