Trip to Greece & Spain - Day 23

Today was check out, and Shane and the kids drove us to Zakynthos. We had a walk around and got Skyla's new swimming costume.

One direction down the main shopping street

and, the other way

I wanted to go to the Castle...see it there in the middle at the top of the hill?

After a bit of a walk around, I only wanted to see the Castle, so we left luggage at bus terminal and walked up with backpacks, esky, thermos and wine around 3km.

A historic mill on the way

We think a water-wheel might have been here

Narrow cobbled streets

A little church on the way up the hill

At last...the Castle Gate!

Had lunch at the entrance. Interesting inside with forest and ruins.

Ruins of Church of Sotiros

The forest inside the fortifications surprised me

Bembo fortification

Barracks from British Rule

Church of Hagios Ioannis Padromis (late 15th & 17th C)

The gaol

Small gunpowder store from Venetian period (mid 17th C)

Old cannons

Grimani Bastion (what we could see from the town)

The port of Zakynthos

Paving on the entrance

Findings from archaeological searches

Tiny garages need tiny cars

A storm is coming! This is Central Bus Station where we get our bus back to Athens (via the ferry)

The Greek Ship is in dry dock

Then the bus boarded the Ferry back to the Mainland and on to Athens. For at least 3 hours there was a young woman 2 seats in front coughing continually, no mask and not covering her mouth. If we didn't already have COVID then we certainly would have got it from her...even though we had our masks on. Other people were giving her severe looks, but she ignored them.

Now that's a downpour!

We arrived 1 1/2 hours late, so got to bus station around 9pm instead of 7:30pm. Bought Gyros and skewers, and lemon beer at the Grill shop then headed back to our AirBnB, which was the same place as we stayed when we first arrived.
