Western Queensland National Parks - 20 Apr

Our drive was to Top Moffatt, and went past the Ranger Hut along a pretty rough road to the quiet camping area. On the way I saw a huge black pig off in the scrub. There was also an animal on the road ahead which Darryl & I both saw. It was about the size of a cat, and we think it was possibly a Northern Quoll.

We had morning tea and John went for a little walk along the road to the homestead while we checked out the creek and took photos of Mt Moffatt peak.

The original plan for the day was to only do this trip, but we finished so early that we decided to go on and look at the walks at the start of the park, instead of doing them on the way out the following morning.

We decided on the loop which first took us past The Chimneys. These are magnificent sandstone pillars. The path continued across the Maranoa River and on to The Tombs burial and art site.

Looking Glass Rock was a bit of fun, and included one spy rock down close and another up high.

On the road a little further along were some Chimneys in the progress of being formed as the water slowly erodes the sandstone.

Fires were burning on the way back, which Darryl and I assumed was a ranger burnoff, but the others turned back to the Ranger Station to report it.

  1. The Circuit Walk is only 5.8km but with apple gums, white cedar pines throughout, there is plenty of scenery to appreciate and well worth the walk. The surrounding sandstone clifft continues to weather resulting in sandy soil with countless ant craters. Pretty sure the ants survive on the sparse vegetation.
