Western Queensland National Parks - 30 Apr

It was almost sad to be leaving Lara Wetlands so soon, but we were out of money and the next port of call beckoned. We packed up before one last dip in the thermal pool, and then took the road to Blackall.

The picnic area where we ate is also a memorial to Jack Howe (champion chearer) and others.

I knew there was a bounty paid on dingo scalps in years gone by, but had no idea it was still happening. (Dell's photo)

This fossilised stump was located o Valparaiso. It is a Conifer and has been preserved by opalisation and silication, and it 225,000 to 1 million years old

Some of us were able to have delicious locally made pies for lunch! (Unfortunately there weren't any gluten-free offerings). The road to Idalia National park was being graded, which probably meant it was in pretty good condition.

Purple wildflowers covered some paddocks, and reminded us of the recent rains.

The stories around some of these old properties can be heartbreaking, although the entrance was intriguing and hopeful.

We had lunch at the old Idalia Homestead, although pretty much all that is left is rubbish.

After eating, the walk behind and up the creek was to Wave rock, but we couldn't find the hut that was also supposed to be there.

John was lucky enough to see and snap an Earless Dragon, just as we saw some lightning and light rain started.

Camping was at Monks Tank (a waterhole), and after noticing the droppings around the site, I found a rabbit burrow.

Monk's Tank is fenced and has a pretty good gate

There were lots of people camped here in caravans, but we didn't let that ruin our enjoyment. We had leftovers for dinner before enjoying a beautiful milky way.

Al looks like he's really relaxed and enjoying the campfire

Well, I don't know about the others, but I've got a glass of wine and "I'm" enjoying myself! (Dell's photo)
