Western Queensland National Parks - 23 Apr

I think we all had a good night, and in the morning, surprisingly, a couple of cars crossed on the Paroo bridge and went past us on the road. We took the Yarrowvale Road back to the highway.

A local was moving his cattle, with the help of his dog, in the 'long paddock'.

Coming into Quilpie we crossed the Bulloo River.

This lovely little town had very wide streets and lots of interesting things for us to check out, including the musem, rail museum, Tourist Information Center, and a water fill-up.

We had a late morning tea at the park, beside the museums, then realised we probably should have stayed for lunch, but we were already on the road out of town.

More emus were over in the distance just outside town, then we came across a turnoff to 'Baldy Top' only a few kilometres off the highway.

It looked intruiging so we decided that might be a great place for lunch. It was an excellent choice as the lunch shelter was extremely new (so new the BBQ plate had not been connected to the electricity yet). After lunch Darryl went for a walk up the jump-up behind the shelter, and we all had a look at 'Baldy Top' but decided against walking up it.

Further west we entered the 'Cooper Basin' and left the 'Bulloo Basin' as we went over the top of Grey Range.

Road-kill included a dead horse & pig. The bitumen was quite narrow, but every so often there would be a wider section for safe overtaking.

Excitement mounted as we neared Windorah and the signs started alerting us to the upcoming Cooper Creek. We followed WikiCamps directions and turned right over the bridge and found a suitable camping spot.

We were welcomed by a pelican who kept sailing regally by, checking us out.

We were also 'welcomed' by lots of flies, so definitely knew we were in Western Queensland.

The full moon rose as we had Happy Hour then dinner.

Al, not quite smiling, but contented as he ticks off a 'Bucket-List Item' of visiting the "Channel Country"

  1. We were lucky to avoid an accident when one of the cattle in the long paddock decided it had enough of the dog and chased it into the path of our car as we slowly passed.
