Kimberleys Trip 20 May 2019

The full moon was so bright that we thought it was morning and got up at 6:15am to find it was still night!

This mean we left Middleton by 7:45am. Plenty more wildlife entertained us, including 2 huge Quails, 12 Wedgetail Eagles, Nankeen Kestrels, 3 Plains Turkeys, 5 kangaroos, galahs, Fairy Martins, Corellas and goats, (I almost feel as though I should end this with "...and a Partidge in a Pear Tree"!)

West of Makunda was a lookout, (Cawnpore Lookout), with very interesting rock formations which what was left of the Eromanga Sea, once inhabited by ichthyosaurs & huge crocodiles.

The Hamilton Hotel Ruins provided a great spot for morning tea, with  very clean toilets & water.

Back on the road again was some roadside water with ducks, and Woodswallows darting across. We fuelled up at Boulia before starting on the Donohue Highway. Our first dragon was on the road near Sun Hill, and we pulled up on the side of the road for lunch near Glenormiston Station. As soon as we crossed the border into the Northern Territory the road became the Plenty Highway.

A goanna was ambling by.
We arrived at the Arthur River just after 5:30pm, although we didn't expect to get this far, but due to 120k of unexpected bitumen the west side of Boulia and the dirt road was in better condition than we had anticipated. This stop had flies flies flies, Willy wagtails, woodswallows, but unfortunately no water at all in the river. Darryl dug for it, but it stunk. We really enjoyed a beautiful moonrise, it was huge and orange. We were completely alone and had a fire and dinner before heading to bed.
