Kimberleys Trip 21 May 2019
We were surprised to find Budgerigars nesting in trees right next to us, but there were plenty of other birds including Corellas, peewees, magpies & galahs.
We had a fairly late start at 8:57am (NT time). It was good to see that they were working on doing up the road. Huge red termite hills were everywhere and there were quite a few bulldust holes in the road.
Plants along the way were Grevilleas, Broom (I think) & spinifex. The Plenty River was dry, so we ended up having Morning tea beside road (on the upwind side as any vehicle going past left a cloud of dust). Over the 2-way we could hear cattle mustering with helicopter and quad-bikes, and it turned out to be kilometers away near Government Bore before Atitjere. Atitjere was the start of bitumen again.
We really only just got the flies under control in the car before we had to stop again...and in they came! Vicks seems to help keep them at bay a bit. A huge flock of around 40 Red-tailed black cockatoos were on the ground, in trees and a couple flying.
We fuelled up at Gem Tree Caravan Park, then had lunch at Monument.
In Alice Springs our priority was to go shopping for flynets & flyspray, as I would have gone crazy without them. South of Alice is Stuarts Well which has free camping. We arrived late, set up in the dark but had hot showers ($5 each). Dinner was with added moths.
