South Australia 9 May 2023

We woke to a beautiful sunrise over Lake Panamaroo and a better temperature of 5.9C.

Darryl made a fast exit over the soft sand to avoid being bogged.

The road to Broken Hill was flat, with the obligatory kangaroo carcass being picked over by crows, kites, and eagles.

Luckily, as soon as we arrived at the Broken Hill Tourist Information Centre at 10am, we were just in time for a free walking mine tour with one of the best guides, Ross.

After the tour, we did a bit of sightseeing around town before driving to an abandoned mine at the top of the hill.

Line of Lode Miner's Memorial to miners who have been killed or died as a result of mining.

We found a historical site to have afternoon tea.

After about an hour of driving we crossed the border into South Australia and pulled up at the Coburn Pub, where you can camp for free if you buy a pub meal. It was certainly welcome and warm inside the pub. We hadn't realised that we weren't supposed to set up right beside the pub, but rather just down the road at the park! We were confused as there were no signs and there was already a caravan there that turned out to belong to the people temporarily running the pub. We were also able to have hot showers in the pub.

  1. I am enjoying remembering where we went and what we saw during our trip south.
