Kimberleys Trip 9 June 2019

It was a little warmer at 11.1oC this morning. Over the rough corrugated road the lid had wound off the peanut butter jar, and it had gone everywhere in the box it was in. It was a bit of a sticky cleanup. Darryl braced the hitch, let the tyres down more and we took a slow drive for the 52km out of the National Park.

Within the park we passed a grader towing 2 big tyres to smooth out the road, but the road from the highway, (through the property), was in a worse state. We were down to 28-30kph, and slower at times as Darryl nursed the camper out.

Halfway along there were half a dozen cattle and a large red kangaroo jumped across in front of the car. Just before the turnoff to the highway is the Caravan park which offers helicopter flights over the Bungle Bungles. It is cheaper if you have 3 people and we were lucky that there was someone, Brian, who was just waiting for 2 others to turn up.

We did a half-hour flight with a young pilot, Anselme (I think). It was fabulous to see it from the air as well as having walked in.

We saw Deep Gorge, which you don't see from the ground and the pilot gave us lots of information, including how Picannini Gorge was started by a meteorite hitting the range. The helicopter also flew up some of the Ord River. Heading back, again to Kunnannurra for our repairs, we stopped again at Warnum for lunch.

A big bull came over to drink from a puddle.

The Ord River

We booked in at the Lakeside Caravan Park again, and got an unpowered site with nice views of the lake. Wine and cheese beside the lake, with the sunset, was a must, and we shared with a nice couple.
